PERSONALITY:
Ranpo is something of a walking contradiction. Despite being a world-class detective, he's often shown to be very childish, and sometimes lacking in common sense. For example, he's incapable of figuring out how to ride the trains in Yokohama on his own, often forcing a co-worker to lead him to his destination. When in the office, he frequently slacks off, sitting around eating junk food in lieu of doing work. However, he's never admonished for this behavior, because when he does work, he's capable of solving a given case in minutes all on his own. As a result of this, Ranpo doesn't see anything wrong with his eccentricities, nor would he consider his behavior to be inappropriate.

Although he gives off the impression that the opinions of others don't matter to him, that isn't entirely the case. The clearest example of this is seen in his interactions with the director of the Armed Detective Agency, Fukuzawa. Ranpo craves Fukuzawa's approval. When his new co-worker Atsushi was kidnapped by the Port Mafia, Ranpo initially didn't want to help locate him, because he thought it was Atsushi's own fault for being captured, and didn't feel any particular attachment to him yet. However, when Fukuzawa is brought into the room, Fukuzawa offers to praise Ranpo after he successfully brings Atsushi back, and he's immediately motivated work. In another example, after Ranpo finally accepts that he doesn't have a supernatural ability, he tells his co-worker Yosano that he doesn't want anyone in the agency to know that the secret is out, because he thinks it would look "uncool" for him to have simply been a normal person all this time.

Ranpo is very arrogant when it comes to his "ability" and intelligence. He isn't afraid to flaunt just how smart he is, even if the situation is inappropriate for it. During a murder case involving a police officer, Ranpo was told he wouldn't be needed -- because the victim was one of his own officers, the detective in charge wanted to handle the case personally. However, Ranpo takes this as a personal slight against his skills, and uses it as an opportunity to deride the other detectives, claiming that he could solve the case in less than sixty seconds -- and then proceeds to do so. Through his theatrics, he reveals one of the other officers present to have been the murderer, leading to them confessing to the crime. While one could argue that it was better for him to have solved the case quickly, there's no denying the fact that he ignored the feelings of the detective originally in charge of the case. For Ranpo, it was seemingly more important that he be the one to solve the case.

Along with his arrogance, Ranpo is also very proud about the fact that he has an "ability", even though he doesn't actually have one at all. While facing off against the Guild, Ranpo and Yosano are drawn into a fictional world inside of a mystery novel, and become trapped until they're able to figure out who the murderer is. However, upon being trapped, Ranpo's glasses are taken away from him. Because Ranpo believes his ability only works while wearing those glasses, he becomes despondent, and completely refuses to look into the mystery without them. His own pride prevents him from admitting that his skills of deduction aren't rooted in anything supernatural, and that he's simply a normal human.

Over the course of the series, Ranpo shows that underneath his massive ego, he's still someone who genuinely cares about others. At one point, he even says that part of the reason he won't admit that his ability isn't real is because of how much faith his co-workers put in him. Ranpo claims to live by the motto: "All's well that's well for me" -- which sounds rather shallow, at first. However, there's a deeper meaning to be found within it. Ranpo knows that his co-workers think he can do anything. And so, if a situation were to occur where his confidence was rattled, it would likely cause all of them to feel ill at ease as well. Ranpo is well aware of this, and so he masks his true feelings until he's able to find a solution.

Ranpo is also not without his selflessness, and has been known to show kindness even to those who have wronged him. For example, after defeating Mushitaro's evidence-hiding ability, Ranpo offers him a business card with a potential job opportunity, knowing that Mushitaro's status as having worked alongside a criminal would have left him in a bad spot. Likewise, after the Guild is defeated, Ranpo extends his friendship to one of its former members, despite the latter still insisting that Ranpo is his rival. All this shows that, despite his arrogance and childishness, Ranpo is still a good person deep down.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
Ranpo is very explicitly stated to not have any supernatural abilities or powers. However, his high intelligence enables him to deduce the truth of any given situation, even in the near absence of any hints or clues. In canon, all it took was a single glance at the corpse of a murder victim for him to figure out the killer, motive, and method of murder, right down to the victim's last words -- which he then explained while listing out which minuscule details he pulled from the crime scene to map out his conclusions. Even more extreme examples of this are found in the light novel, where it's said he was previously fired from his job at a post office for throwing out letters he knew were unimportant or would make the recipients unhappy, despite not reading them.

When Ranpo was younger, he was told this gift of his was a supernatural ability, and was fooled into thinking it could only be "activated" when he's wearing a specific pair of glasses. While Ranpo is aware now that he doesn't have a supernatural ability, he still has a tendency to only utilize his deduction skills when wearing these glasses, and will still claim to have an ability if asked.

Due to the high possibility of this "gift" being used for info-modding, I'll make sure to keep an open communication with any player where it's being utilized, and find simple explanations for why he didn't notice something if the player in question doesn't want Ranpo to figure it out. Thankfully, he's lazy enough to make this a very easy workaround.

INVENTORY: Just the clothes on his back and a pair of glasses.
